The energy was palpable last Thursday as the Burlington Democratic City Committee gathered at our annual caucus to chart the course for 2026. With a focus on stability, experienced leadership, and a commitment to addressing the city’s most pressing challenges—housing, public safety, and fiscal responsibility—the party has officially nominated its slate for the upcoming March elections.

From seasoned incumbents to a dedicated new challenger, the 2026 team is ready to get to work for the Queen City.

The 2026 City Council Nominees

This year’s slate features a strong mix of continuity and fresh perspective. We are proud to endorse four incumbents who have navigated the city through complex budget cycles and community initiatives, alongside a passionate community leader running in Ward 8.

  • Ward 4: Sarah Carpenter (Incumbent) – Bringing her deep expertise in housing and social services back to the table.

  • Ward 5: Ben Traverse (Incumbent) – Our current City Council President, continuing his leadership in Ward 5.

  • Ward 6: Becca Brown McKnight (Incumbent) – A steadfast advocate for South End residents.

  • Ward 7: Evan Litwin (Incumbent) – Continuing his focus on community engagement and safety for Burlington.

Ward 8: Ryan Nick – Our challenger for Ward 8. A Justice of the Peace and Planning Commission member, Ryan is ready to bring a proactive, results-oriented voice to the student-heavy district.

Celebrating the Andrew Champagne Award

One of the most moving moments of the evening was the presentation of the Andrew Champagne Award.

For those who didn't know him, Andrew Champagne was a beloved figure in Burlington politics and a tireless advocate for voter registration and civic participation. He believed that democracy wasn't just something that happened on Election Day; it was something built through daily conversation, neighborly support, and the simple act of showing up.

This award is given annually to an individual who embodies Andrew’s "boots-on-the-ground" spirit—someone who works selflessly behind the scenes to strengthen our community and our party. This year’s recipient serves as a reminder that the heart of Burlington is found in its volunteers. To register to vote
